Great Falls Group Sending Medical Supplies to the Congo

Posted: Updated:

Congolese people will soon get some relief.

"The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the poorest nations in the world. It's been devastated by wars. It's been devastated by refugees," says Tom Jacobson who will be traveling to the Congo.

A group of Great Falls residents from the First Presbyterian Church will fly to the country that has been called the "world's deadliest humanitarian crisis." More than 38,000 people die every month from treatable diseases such as malaria and infections.

"We'll be traveling to orphanages and working with the kids there. We'll be spending a lot of time at the hospital in Canoga," says Jacobson.

The group has received support from the community. Benefis has donated thousands of dollars worth of medical supplies. Delta Airlines has given each person three free checked bags up to 50 pounds. Aside from giving them medical attention, they will help women become self sufficient.

"If they've been raped or abused, a lot of the time they are (ousts) from their families and community."

They will be teaching women how to sew and giving them sewing machines so they will be able to make a living selling clothes they make. Jacobson says the hope he comes back looking at the world he lives in differently.

"I don't think I can give enough to match what they'll be giving back. The experience. The people. The culture and a change in perspective."
