Judge Dismisses Oil and Gas Leases Lawsuit

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit from environmentalists who tried to block almost 80,000 acres of oil and gas leases in Montana.

Three environmental groups argued that future drilling on the leases would make climate change worse. They wanted the federal government to force companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But U.S. District Judge Sam Haddon said in Friday's ruling that the emissions would be too small to make a "meaningful contribution" to global greenhouse gas levels. Haddon said that as a result, the plaintiffs in the case could not show that they would suffer any harm from the lease sales. Officials at the Western Environmental Law center says an appeal is possible.Industry groups including the American Petroleum Institute sided with the government in the case.
