The heat wave this past week and lack of moisture combine to create ideal fire conditions. Great Falls Fire Rescue was prepared for their usual round of nonstop calls the night of July 4th, but luckily they weren't needed as much this year.
Dirk Johnson, Great Falls Fire Marshal, says, "it was a relatively calm night compared to the past. We had a couple of shrub fires that were related to fireworks tipping over. We had a couple dumpster fires and then one grass fire related to fireworks, but it was relatively calm for what we've had in the past".
Great Falls Fire Rescue only had 21 calls last night, including EMS calls. Last nights' fires were minor and under control quickly. When the fire department were not on actual fires, they spent hours roaming the streets to make sure people using fireworks were following the rules and using proper safety precautions.
