American Red Cross Issues Emergency Call for Blood Donors

Posted: Updated:

The American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood and platelet donations following the 4th of July holiday. Red Cross officials say every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood and in the past two summers they've seen a decrease in donations.

The American Red Cross needs blood donors of all blood types especially those with O negative,
B negative and A negative. The organization experienced fewer donations than expected in June and the first week of July. Nationally, donations through the Red Cross were down ten percent in June. That's approximately 50,000 fewer donations than expected. One reason why donations were so low the first week of July was because of the 4th of July holiday. It landed in the middle of the week, causing many people to be out of town.

To be fully stocked, the Red Cross in Montana needs about 700 donors each week. The American Red Cross supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood. To donate call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit
