Florida Man Dies While Climbing In Glacier National Park

Posted: Updated:

KALISPELL - A Florida man fell one-thousand feet to his death while climbing in Glacier National Park.

It's the second fatal accident this summer at Glacier National Park. Tuesday morning Park Rangers received a phone call from a group of people climbing up Apikuni Mountain. They said a 21- year-old man in their group fell 1,000 feet.

"They were not able to visualize the individual, they weren't able to communicate with the individual and they just didn't feel good about the fall," GNP Spokeswoman Denise Germann said. The man from Davie, Florida was working as a seasonal employee at the Many Glacier Hotel.

Officials said the area in which he fell is very steep with cliffs and rocky terrain. Park Rangers used a short haul emergency rescue tool to locate the man's body.

"What they did was they got a helicopter and they have a rescuer on a line below the helicopter that goes into the location and then packages the body, removes the body and the rescuer to safer location," Germann said.

Denise said it's important for visitors to understand their level of expertise before climbing mountains at Glacier National Park.

"Anytime you recreate in the great outdoors there is always inherit risks and folks just need to do the best they can to be prepared."

"Know the level of skills that you have compared to what your planning to do, you just always need to be prepared as best as you can."

Park officials are holding the man's identity at this time as they continue to notify family members and the investigation into his death continues. ABC Fox Montana tried to speak to workers at Many Glacier Hotel but they declined to comment as they are grieving at this time.
