Saving Helena's Central School

Posted: Updated:

Central School....to be renovated or to be torn down that is the decision that is to be made next Tuesday the 16th, a local group has formed to keep, repair, and improve the historic school.

Construction on this building started all the way back to 1915 and has stood through multiple earthquakes that have struck the Helena area . Central School is important due to its central location in Helena and proximity to downtown up until this year when the school was forced to close. They had shut down the school because of a structural engineering report that stated the building would suffer great damage in the event of an earthquake.

The Helena School Board now has a decision on their hands to either rehabilitate the school or to tear it down and build a new Central School on the same property.

People do not only want to keep the building because of its historical presence.....but also because the costs of building an entire new building don't add up.

The renovation is going to bring this building completely up to code. From safety to technology, not to mention it would be greener for the environment to keep the existing building rather than to build a new one.

If you wanted to help you can go to www.savehelenaschools.com and they have a petition there.
