Man Makes it his Mission to Collect Evel Knievel Goods

BUTTE -

Evel Knievel Days serves as one of the biggest events in Evel's hometown of Butte.

The famous daredevil served as an inspiration, motivating folks to do the impossible.

While Evel Knievel had an impact on so many people, one man in particular, is keeping that alive.

A year and a half ago Lathan McKay went on a mission.

Inspired by the late Evel Knievel, Lathan made it his mission to collect everything and anything related to his hero.

"My father said a lot of the same things, individualism mainly," McKay said. "He created his own brand out of nothing and became a phenomenon. Keeping your word and just living life, not just existing, and just going for whatever your dream is."

For the last 15 months Lathan and his team have traveled around the country and even overseas to collect Evel Knievel memorabilia.

He's collected everything from stunt bikes to even Evel's parachute used to slow him down on jumps.

"Countless leathers, personal items, wardrobe, x-rays, you name it, cufflinks, personal family items," said McKay. "Just anything we could get our hands on that's original."

Included in the collection are some of Evel's stunt ramps, which will be used in this weekend's Evel Knievel Days.

"He was a living legend," said Louis Re, who will be stunt riding on Evel's ramp. "You come into the town and you're doing something he did. It's a lot to live up to. I have a lot of nerves and a lot of anxiety about it."

Lathan's collection will be showcased throughout the United States in the next few months.

While he's touring, Lathan says he will keep collecting his hero's memorabilia.

"It's a passion," he said. "Once I get something in my head, I never stop until I achieve it. That's just the way I am."

Lathan has also taken over Evel's brand, known as Evel Knievel Enterprises.

Lathan and his team will have their display of Evel Knievel goods at the Phoenix building in Uptown Butte throughout Evel Knievel Days.
