Good Morning America Visits Missoula

MISSOULA -

A beloved cold treat in Missoula is heating up as a national news show looks at the Big Dipper.

For some, the decision is easy.

"That's bubble gum ice cream," said Ryann Rugg pointing to her son's cone ,"and he gets the same ice cream since he's been thirteen."

Bulldog loyalty to the flavors at Big Dipper ice cream in Missoula has caught on.

"I think every friend, relative, and family member that comes to Missoula or Montana to visit everybody brings them to Big Dipper," said Rugg.

Due, in part, to such positive word of mouth, Missoula boasts a nationally recognized, locally owned, brand of frozen dessert. Today, a camera crew for Good Morning America shot footage for a segment that will air Thursday in an effort to find the best ice cream in the country.

"It's the perfect story, it's the perfect Missoula summertime story, "said Pete Talbot, a freelance producer.

Under the spotlight, it's not business as usual. At 2 o'clock the line already snaked out almost to the road without any sign of shortening soon.

"Usually the big crowd comes after dinner between seven and nine," explained Talbot, "there'll be lines out to Higgins Avenue."

Rugg gets a scoop at Big Dipper at least once a week and came early today to get another taste of what has the nation talking. "This is our favorite ice cream store," said Rugg.

Tuesday morning the management of Big Dipper mailed off seven flavors of ice cream so that the anchors of GMA can see firsthand why their business has more than ten thousand likes on Facebook.
