July Gas Prices Are The Highest In Five Months

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

You might have noticed gas has been a little more expensive recently compared to the beginning of the month. In fact, July saw the largest jump in gas prices since February.

The price for a gallon of gas at the many gas stations in Bozeman was $3.63 per gallon Wednesday. That happens to be below the state average of $3.71 according to AAA.

When Joe Johnson, Vice President of Best Rate Towing and Repair, was asked how his company was dealing with the higher fuel costs, he said "it's kind of a challenge."

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline rose 14 cents in July, going from $3.49 a gallon to $3.63.

In Montana, gas prices rose nine cents to an average of $3.79 a gallon.

Johnson's business is affected by these prices. He says the best solution to avoid raising their prices was replacing their tow trucks.

"We keep upgrading the equipment," said Johnson. "We have some pretty new trucks, you know the most fuel efficient trucks we can get."

He says high gas prices are also making them keep tabs on when they run their trucks.

"We can monitor idle times on the trucks and if they idle more than 5 minutes, it will send an alert to the dispatcher that the P.T.O. is not engaged but the truck is idling."

The higher gas prices aren't only affecting towing businesses. Many residents say it's causing them to think twice about that weekend getaway.

"It's very difficult to take a vacation when the price of gas is astronomical," said Heide Lester.

Heide Lester says her family is having fun a little closer to home.

"It has taken a big toll on how much we drive around the state to do any sort of vacation type thing," said Lester. "We just haven't, we do a little stay-cation."

The statewide average for a gallon of regular has been at least $3.60 since it reached that mark back in May.

The average price for gas for this July was the third highest average on record for July, at $3.58.
