Another Democrat Backs Out of the Running for U.S. Senate

Posted: Updated:

Superintendent of public instruction Denise Juneau is joining other top Democrats who have turned down running for the U.S. Senate.

Juneau said Monday that she will not be running for the Senate seat being vacated by Max Baucus. She also ruled out running for the U.S. House, because she prefers her current job.

Baucus' retirement announcement created the first battle for an open Senate seat in the state since the 1970s, but at this point there are no announced front-runners. Former Governor, Brian Schweitzer, State Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen and political veteran Stephanie Schriock have all declined. However, Lieutenant Governor John Walsh has not ruled out a run for the office. On the Republican side, U.S. Representative Steve Daines is considered a likely candidate.
