Missoula Ranks 13 On List Of High Tech Start Up Places

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Missoula ranks in the top 20 cities in the nation for high tech start up businesses in a report from the Kauffman Foundation.

About three years ago Missoula filmmaker, Jesse Spaulding and his wife started their company, Spaulding International Cinema, which provides high definition footage for movies, TV and for websites.

"We've never produced a piece of equipment before, so this is a new endeavor for our business," Spaulding said.

A month ago, the Spauldings released their first piece of equipment, a camera stabilizer, known as "the Ghost".

"We wanted something that would provide a smooth cinematic shot, so that's how this evolved," Spaulding said.

The Ghost is a robotic camera stabilizing rig programmed to stay level, from the air or the ground.

"It's exciting, I never thought I'd be producing camera equipment," Spaulding said.

The Spalding's business is the perfect example of why Missoula stands at number 13 in the Kauffman Foundation's list of cities with a high tech start up scene.

"It's such an amazing location, and I can see how creativity flows when you live in a place like Missoula," Spaudling said.

The report shows Missoula beat metro areas, like Austin, Texas, and Portland, Ore., in the density of start ups located here, a fact that did not surprise James Grunke of the Missoula Economic Partnership.

"We have everything in place that they desire, tremendous quality of life for technology start ups, which is important, and the University of Montana," Grunke said.

Spaulding said he couldn't be happier to start his business here in Missoula.

He added, "It's a road I didn't see myself going down, but in hindsight it's really what I was meant to do."

The Spauldings released the equipment on Kickstarter.com, where people can pre-order the Ghost.

The funds help them put the equipment into a large-scale production.

If you want to check out the ghost head to Kickstarter, or Spaulding International Cinema.
