Scammer targets guest at Helena Hotel

Posted: Updated:

It was Sunday night when a guest at the Wingate Hotel in Helena received a suspicious phone call.

The General Manager, Michele Steele explained "he called and asked for a particular room number, my front desk transferred it to that number, the guest answered and it was a man calling and he said he was the general manager"

The man calling on the phone claiming to be the general manager of the hotel stated that he needed some verification of some credit card information.

"She said she in paid cash, and he said we want to give a rebate so we need your credit card number."

The guest, was suspicious of the phone call and the reasoning's for it and hung up, then called the front desk back and verified it wasn't them.

"The guest called back and she recognized the voice, and my front desk clerk hung up the phone on him and refused to transfer him to any other rooms."

After the hotel received yet another call asking to be transferred to the same room, the Helena Police Department was called.

"The most important thing for guest to know is that the hotel is not going to call them and ask for their credit card number, we would ask them to come down to the front desk so that the could verify and you know, we can check i.d. and give it in person"

After the incident that occurred on Sunday night the Helena Police Department is urging people to not give out any credit card or personal information out over the phone to anyone unknown.
