Things are Turning Around for Residents and Drivers Affected by the Lolo Fire

Posted: Updated:

There is good news for property owners and travelers along the Idaho border, cooler weather and light rain have boosted efforts to prevent the large wildfire from moving east.

Fire managers at the Lolo Creek complex of fires have reopened U.S. Highway 12 and allowed residents to return to approximately 250 homes.

Fire spokeswoman Dixie Dies says fire managers ended the evacuation and opened the road at 6 a.m. Saturday.

She says there's still a lot of work to do, however because fire is still burning strong through timber on the north edge.

About 650 personnel have been assigned to the blaze and more are arriving. Nine helicopters are also taking a part in the action.

The 17-square-mile complex of fires was started by lightning on August 18th and as of now is 40% contained.
