Arrest made in Helena after shots fired on Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

It all started two days ago on Tuesday the 27th at around 7:30 P.M. when police received a phone call of possible gun shots fired in the area of 6th and Hoback, between Downtown and the Capitol.

"The officers responded there, didn't locate anything." Helena Police Chief McGee stated "Nothing looked like it had been shot, didn't locate anything, no people around so they left the area"

A few hours later officers get more information from witnesses leading them to believe their indeed was gun shot activity in the area at that time.

"From what we could sort out, the suspect and the victim knew each other and agreed to meet each other there to fight over some disagreement and the one person had showed up and the other person came by in his vehicle, and from witnesses say and the victim said, he pointed a gun out the window and took two shots"

After receiving the name of 35-year-old Matthew Garfield Williams from Helena, the police department then issued a warrant for his arrest for assault with a weapon. It wasn't until yesterday afternoon when police got the word of where he might be.

"Kinda got some information he might be down in the area of Poplar and Oakes. The officers down in that area did see him on foot, some of the plain clothed officers"

After initially taking off by foot, Williams eventually submitted to arrest in the backyard of an apartment building  on the corner of Poplar and Oakes.

Police also recovered marijuana and a pot pipe that Williams had thrown and has been charged for those two as misdemeanors as well and was taken to jail at that time. Bail is set at $50,000.
