Co-Workers Remember Deputy John Amos Ridenour

BOZEMAN -

On Tuesday, family, friends and co-workers are coping with the tragic loss of Deputy John Amos Ridenour of the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office.

Ridenour fell to his death on Monday morning, while rock climbing in Hyalite Canyon.

"It's not anything that was expected. It's a shock to us and his family and everybody that knew him," said Lieutenant Ryan Stratman, Gallatin County Sheriff's Office.

Lieutenant, Ryan Stratman has worked with John Amos Ridenour since he started with the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office in 2005. He said Ridenour always brought a smile to everyone's face.

"He was always that guy that would make you laugh," said Stratman. "He was always joking around and laughing. He also had a real passion for his job."

Prior to joining the Sheriff's Office, Ridenour worked for Montana State University's Police Department. While on the Sheriff's Office, he served as a SWAT team leader and was part of the bike patrol. Stratman said Ridenour loved his job and always went above and beyond.

"He was just starting to go out in the community and have coffee with people in the community," said Stratman.

A Facebook page was set-up on Tuesday to remember deputy Ridenour called remembering John "Amos" Ridenour.

Stories and photos have been pouring in all day to remember the 35-year-old dad and patrol officer. Sheriff, Brian Gootkin said the department is really sticking together after the loss of one of their deputies.

"We're just spending a lot of time together, talking about the good times and staying busy," said Gootkin.

Gootkin has been staying busy being there for Ridenour's family during this difficult time.

"Today, Warren our Chaplin and I have been escorting the families from the airport to the house and just doing everything we can to help," said Gootkin.

Ridenour's funeral will be held this Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Grace Bible Church in Bozeman on 19th Avenue and Stucky Road.

A memorial fund is set up at all First Security Banks in Bozeman, Belgrade and Three Forks. Ridenour leaves behind a wife and two young children.
