Young Whitefish Girls Inspired To Sell Artwork

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH -

Two elementary school-aged sisters have decided to sell their paintings during a silent auction at the Rare Bird Studio Gallery in Whitefish.

"I decided to raise money for Winter the dolphin," said Grace Elden, one of the featured artists.

Grace, a fourth grader from Whitefish, along with her sister Sofia, are putting up their handicrafts for auction September 17 after watching a documentary this past summer about Winter, a dolphin in Florida that lost her tail after getting caught in a crabbing net. Winter now swims with a prosthesis.

"I'm very proud of both of them," said Grace's mother, Cari Elden, "I'm very excited to see what they've produced and see their prints framed on the wall and have it go to something they believe in."

The lowest bid starts at thirty-five dollars and the family aims to send about one thousand dollars Winter's way, and that includes money raised from raffle tickets where prizes include everything from stuffed animals to a trip to meet Winter.

"Winter the dolphin needs a new facility," explained Grace.

Throughout the year, children--and even injured troops with prosthetic limbs--meet and swim with Winter.

Cari Elden says she hopes to see up to a hundred people come out to the gallery.

"The show mainly is their art and it's framed and then we have some prints that we made that are unframed. They're all prints of their original artwork," said Cari Elden.

The doors on Central Avenue opened at 5:00 p.m. and children who feel inspired are asked to contribute their own artwork for viewing.

This is not the first time the girls have raised money for a cause.

When Grace was five, she collected nearly five hundred dollars to rehabilitate birds affected by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
