MSU Fraternity Responds To Sexual Assault Cases

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Montana State University Police and University Officials continue their investigation of two reports of sexual assaults that happened this weekend in two fraternity houses. Until the investigation is completed, MSU has suspended both fraternities.

President of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Montana State University, Erik Enselman said he is surprised by the alleged sexual assault without consent incident that happened at his fraternity house over the weekend.

"It's obviously not a good thing. It's not a good thing for the school, so we need to just get through the process and cooperate," said Enselman.

He said an incident like this is out of character for his fraternity and they are doing everything they can to work with the University to make sure the case is taken care of.

"This is nothing that we stand for at all," said Enselman. "Right away we set up a meeting with the Dean of Students to get everything sorted out and what to do to get this thing over with as soon as possible and get through the process."

The second incident occurred at the Sigma Chi Fraternity house on Sunday morning. They refused to comment on the case. MSU Police Chief, Robert Putzke said they do have suspects in both cases.

"We do have suspects in each of the cases and we're going to continue to talk to witnesses and talking to the suspects," said Putzke. "If criminal charges are warranted the case would be presented to the county attorney's office. It will be up to the county attorney's office to determine whether or not to accept criminal charges."

After this weekend, six separate sexual assaults have been reported on campus since January. Putzke said typically victims will report the incidents to the police, but then tell police not to take any further action.

"Each case is an individual case. It's not usual to see charges filed because the difficulty of the case," said Putzke. "Initially when a person is a victim of a violent crime like this, they have a difficult emotional time dealing with the trauma that's happened."

Enselman said he hopes these cases get resolved soon.

"I hope this is a learning experience for everyone on campus," said Enselman.

Putske said although these cases are not related, alcohol was involved in both.

In a press release sent out by Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, the chapter has placed the alleged member on administrative suspension until the investigation is completed.
