Athletic Training for Hunting Season

Posted: Updated:

Hunting Season, and particularly Bow-Hunting in Montana, means having to travel long-distances on foot, and combining more traditional forms of sport can help in getting ready for hunting season.

"What an amazing running community.  We've got a run called the Pengelly Double-Dip.  It goes up and over Sentinel, 2700 vertical feet.  Half marathon, that's what keeps me going, thinking about I've got to stay in shape to run these races, and if I can run these races come September, I'll be good in the woods," says Missoula Hunter Eric Tangedahl.

Tangedahl has been preparing for hunting season since last year, even putting together a youtube video for a competition put on by the Sportsman Channel, showcasing how people train for bow hunting.

"In elk hunting in particular, they tend to be at high elevations, so one you've got to get there.  Mountains in Montana are steep, you're going to spend multiple days doing that, those who've been out there know that a lot of it is taking your rifle or bow for a walk until you see something, and then the big part is you've got to be ready to get that animal out.  You've got to be ethical and pack out every bit of that meat, and not get injured," says Tangedahl.

While back-country bow-hunting in particular requires plenty of endurance and strength, it's a sport that reminds Tangedahl of his high school track and field days.

"I think it's hard to get past distance running, especially distance running up hills.  I do throw in weight-training.  The stuff I did in the video is a program out of Jackson Hole called Mountain Athlete, and he does sport-specific, similar to cross-fit, and very much relate to the sports, and they do a big game hunting program.  While running can get your cardio going, you put a 60-80 pound pack on your back and you'll want to have some strong squads for that," says Tangedahl.
