Bozeman Deaconess Breaks Ground In Big Sky

Posted: Updated:
BIG SKY, Mont. -

Bozeman deaconess hospital broke ground Monday afternoon for a new hospital in Big Sky.

The groundbreaking comes after B.D.H. lost a bid for a medical facility proposal there to Billings Clinic.

The Big Sky Medical Center will be a full service hospital in Big Sky's town center.

It will be feature a 24/7 emergency room, expanding imaging, a hospital lab, four to six inpatient beds and pharmacy.

This groundbreaking comes after the Big Sky-West Yellowstone Health Directions Committee voted August 7 to recommend a proposal from Billings Clinic to build a health care facility in the area.

Representatives from Big Sky voted in favor of a Bozeman Deaconess facility while West Yellowstone representatives voted for Billings Clinic.

But Bozeman Deaconess has been planning and acquiring land in Big Sky for a number of years and decided to move forward with their commitment to Big Sky.

"We saw very strong support from the major employers, strong support from existing patient base, both here, in West Yellowstone and other parts of the county and for us that was the affirmation for us to move forward," Kevin Pitzer, Bozeman Deaconess Health Services CEO.

Big Sky Resort General Manager Taylor Middleton said it makes sense for Bozeman Deaconess Hospital to build in Big Sky.

"Where do we go when we want to go to the hospital?" asked Middleton. "Where are all of our doctors? Where are most of our friends? Where are business relationships? The Big Sky and Bozeman Communities are linked at the hip. Always have. Always will."

Pitzer said a hospital isn't the only building being built on the land.

"We will be building a medical office building that will be attached to the hospital," said Pitzer. "That can be used by existing community physicians or as the community grows and we need additional primary care specialty physicians resources."

Construction on the Big Sky Medical Center is expected to begin next spring.

The Big Sky Medical Center is expected to open in 2015.
