Retired Military Dog Killed

Posted: Updated:

A retired military dog who served twice in Iraq has died after being struck by a vehicle in Montana.

The 7-year-old, explosives-detecting German shepherd named Natz died Monday after being hit outside east Helena.

Montana Highway Patrol says that the driver, in his 70s and from Helena, pulled Natz off the road and reported the accident to authorities.

They added that the man reported being blinded by oncoming headlights, and that he felt even worse after finding out about Natz's background. The man isn't being cited.

Rachel Weidner says she received Natz in May to fulfill a dream of acquiring a retired military dog. She says Monday was the first time he went missing.

Natz retired in the spring because of post-traumatic stress disorder.
