Insurers Offer Update on Online Marketplace

Posted: Updated:

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Insurers offering health plans through the new online marketplace say the first week was frantic but they expect things to calm down as the enrollment period continues.

A crush of people jammed the federal government web site where consumers can sign up for Montana's insurance plans offered under the nation's new health care law. The site launched Tuesday, and the traffic overwhelmed the system for the first few days.

Insurance companies and state officials say that shows just how much interest there is.

Three companies are offering insurance through the exchange: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana, PacificSource and Montana Health Co-Op.

Representatives of those companies say they are telling consumers to be patient and learn about the programs.

The enrollment period lasts until Dec. 15 for coverage beginning in January.
