Rally In Bozeman To End Government Shutdown

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

People across the country continue to protest the government being shut down 15 days later.

Tuesday, around 50 people gathered in Bozeman calling on congress to end the shutdown and get the government running.

"We are calling on congress, especially Representative Daines, to do absolutely everything they can to vote to end the shutdown and to vote to raise the debt ceiling," said Nina Grey, Organizing for Action.

The groups that organized Tuesday's rally Organizing for Action, Montana Organizing Project and Forward Montana target Congressman Steve Daines because he is Montana's only member of the House, where the budget failed causing the shutdown.

They said they held the rally because other methods aren't working.

"People are finding that calling the congressional offices is not enough," Elizabeth Marum, Montana Organizing Project.  "Some of those offices are closed. Congressman Daines are open."

Many protesters claim house republicans want cuts to Social Security and other programs to deal with any default.

A move Marum said isn't an option.

"I was raised on social security," said Marum. "My dad died when I was two in a mining accident and all of a sudden my mother was widowed with three small children and social security was there for me."

Marum said helped organize for her children.

"They have fewer opportunities than I did," said Marum. "Jobs don't necessarily have pensions, few pensions, lucky if you have a 401k."

There will be protests in Great Falls and Missoula Wednesday. Those protests are expected to go on even if the government reopens.
