Salish Language May be Heading to City Signs in Missoula

Posted: Updated:

City council members met with members of the Salish-Pend D'oreille Culture Committee on Monday and asked them to help identify areas in Missoula that have cultural significance to the Bitterroot Salish people and help in getting the language correct.

Missoula plans to install new directional and interpretive signs to replace what is now a clutter of signs at some intersections. City officials say the citywide project could cost up to $1.2 million.

Culture Committee Director Tony Incahola said Monday, the bi-lingual signs will help people understand where they live, the history of the area and what's beneath all the concrete.
