The Commissioner of Political Practices in Montana says an ongoing investigation found "dark money" groups were coordinating spending with candidates illegally.
Jonathan Motl releasing five decisions today that sides with former Republican House Candidate Debra Bonogofsky after she alleged that former State Representative Dan Kennedy in the 2010 election cycle coordinated mailers to avoid the campaign finance laws.
Motl said that activity was not reported by Kennedy or outside groups and that the case will now move to prosecution.
Coming off the 2012 election where Rick Hill received a half a million dollar donation, but was not allowed to use it, legislative candidates from that cycle will now be investigated. Motl has warned all candidates in 2014 to not get close to third-party groups, and that violations could result in fines, or even removal from office.
