Great Falls Man Owns 150 Year Old Newspaper

Posted: Updated:

Jim Harland of Great Falls is in possession of a very interesting piece of journalistic American history. He has a newspaper from the Civil War era that he usually keeps in a small box, but today Harland pulled the paper out for a very special occasion.

"Today is its 150th anniversary. It is dated October 17, 1863. Its a New York Tribune and it has a map on it that shows the movement of the Union Army on the Potomac during the Civil War. I know a lot of the places on the map aren't there anymore. They have probably been paved over or had cities built on them, but I just thought it was kind of interesting. It mentions President Lincoln in it, and it just needs to be preserved."

Harland said he came into ownership of the old newspaper when he was doing a favor for a relative.

"The paper was in an old shed that my brother in law had and when he was getting a divorce from my sister he asked me to go over and clean out the shed. He said keep what you want and throw the rest away. So I decided to keep this. It was kind of cool."

Harland plans on preserving the newspaper that has taken on a life of its own.

"If the paper could talk, it probably has a pretty interesting story to tell coming from New York to Montana in 1863."

Harland said he hopes to one day have the newspaper encased in glass to make sure it survives another 150 years.
