Champion of Character: RoShawn West

Posted: Updated:

It's a few hours away from sunrise in Havre, Montana, and the MSU-Northern Lights are hard at work getting in shape for the upcoming basketball season as expected. What comes as a surprise, is the gut wrenching story of their senior point guard, RoShawn West.

"RoShawn is a high character guy, he's a leader, he's a first class guy, no nonsense, and he's competitive. He's got a great attitude".- said Head Coach at MSU-N, Shawn Huse

Not very many college kids are awake and working at 5:30 in the morning, RoShawn West is the exception. He's in the gym and hitting the books. When tragedy struck his family, he took on the role as a bread winner, never dreaming that a college career would be in the cards for him.

On March 21, 2007 RoShawn's life was forever changed. The gunshots heard by children leaving school that afternoon was the chilling sound of a young man's life being taken in cold blood. That 23 year old man was RoShawn's brother, Randy. Roshawn remembered that fateful day down to every detail.

"usually my mom picks me up, but this time she was late, and I thought she was just getting through traffic, you know? So I walked outside and I got this phone call and I heard someone screaming, and I knew it was my mom. My mom's boyfriend told me that my brother had been shot. It happened 15 minutes away from where I went to school. So, my cousin took me immediately, and a police officer stopped me and asked "are you the victim's brother?" I said, "yeah" and he said, well, your brother has been pronounced dead." -said MSU-N Senior Guard, RoShawn West

It would have been easy for RoShawn to give up or feel like the world was against him, but take a look at the current chapter of his life, and it's clear that resilience and determination are some of the threads that have kept him together. Instead of claiming a victim title, he proved to be a role model to he teammates with actions instead of words.

"He's always there for me no matter what. He's really aggressive on the court, he'll go to battle for you and he expects the same, he's definitely a good teammate".-said MSU-N Senior Guard, Alfie Miller

" He turns every bad situation into an opportunity, that's just the way RoShawn is. He's dealt with some tough stuff, and now I think he's one of the best players in the Frontier conference"

West shot nearly 40% from the 3-point line last year, and this season he's averaging 25 minutes a game..You'll be able to see this Champion of Character at MSU-Northern's next home game when they play MSU-Billings on November 1st.

Montana is facing a major overcrowding issue in animal shelters across the state.  With every shelter at max capacity, if not more, animal shelters are forced to make room wherever possible. The main culprits of the overcrowding are cats, however, dogs are also part of the equation.
