New Gay Rights Legislation was Passed Today

Posted: Updated:

The US senate passed legislation that would make it illegal to discriminate against gay, bisexual and transgender Americans in the workplace.

Gay rights groups hailed today's vote as a big step up, but feel it will likely end in the senate.

For instance, house speaker John Boehner opposes the legislation. In a statement, his spokesman said that the speaker believes it will quote, "increase frivolous litigation, and cost American jobs, especially small business jobs."

As of now, there are no indications that Boehner will let this bill get to the house floor for a vote.

But President Obama said in a statement that one house of congress should not stand in the way of millions of Americans who want to go to work and not be judged.
