The Future of Social Security

Posted: Updated:

An organization is fighting to make sure that Social Security is available for future generations.

The Montana Organizing Project held a meeting today to talk about the concerns they have if the federal government were to cut Social Security benefits.

The group addressed how the system works best for women, low-income communicates, and same-sex couples.

They also touched on how people are taxed through Social Security and said the system helps not only individuals, but the whole economy.  Elizabeth Marum with the Montana Organizing Project says Montana is a very vulnerable for any changes congress may put forth in Social Security.

Marum stated, "we are an aging state, so our state is aging more rapidly than other states, and Social Security benefits bring $2.7 billion into this state's economy."

More than 200,000 people in Montana receive Social Security.
