Student Shows Appreciation To Veterans

Posted: Updated:
THREE FORKS -

The gymnasium was packed in Three forks on Monday as students, teachers and the community honored veterans.

Fifth grader, Allyson Kamps was one of the nearly six hundred Three Forks kids that attended the Veterans Day program at her school. During the event, kindergarten through fifth graders went up and sang a song to remember all the veterans.

"I like the assembly so much because it means so much to me to have some of my family serving in the army," said Kamps.

The event meant a lot to Kamps because her great great uncle, Ray Lau was there.

"He's a really great guy. Every time we have a family reunion he has pens or magnets made and on Halloween he'll give you the biggest candy bar," said Kamps.

Lau has been organizing the Three Forks Veterans Day program for 30 years. He served in the navy in World War II as store keeper on a small attack ship.

After the veterans day program, Kamps said she always goes up to her uncle and gives him a hug.

It's really personal because I know that they've served for the country and for me," said Kamps.

"She's a sweet little girl and she's just wonderful," said Lau.

Lau said he hopes all the kids left on Monday understanding that freedom isn't free, many people had to fight for it.

"It makes me feel good knowing that people do recognize the fact of what we did," said Lau. "We went out, did our job and now they appreciate it."

"I learned that it's really important to stop and just think about our country for a minute," said Kamps.
