Anonymous Whitefish Donation Has A Nice Ring To It

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH -

You can already hear how the second anonymous donation to the Whitefish school district within a year has tuned up the music department.

It looks like Christmas came early at Whitefish High School

"I think its transformed the experience for some of the kids," said Mark McCrady, the high school and middle school band director.

Two donations, one last spring and another this fall, from the same anonymous donor add up to more than $50,000. The money has already been put to work in the Whitefish middle and high school music departments, touching more than 300 students.

"If we're lucky we might receive one grant per year, so we might buy one instrument each year, and this has really obviously sped up that process," explained McCrady.

Thousands of dollars of equipment has already arrived and more is still on the way, including clarinets, drums, and guitar amps--music to the ears.

"Normally I just have maybe a $100 piece of equipment, now, it's like a couple thousand dollars-worth of equipment," said Malachi Derks, a bass trombonist at Whitefish High School..

Another freshman, Mckayla Stone, had never before played an instrument that had never been played before.

"I opened up the box. It was brand new. Still all in wrapping so no one had ever touched it before," said Mckayla.

Both Mckayla and Malachi agree that you can hear the difference.

"It's more crisp and clean rather than like all clogged up and old," said Mckayla.

If you want to hear some of the new instruments in person, the fall jazz and percussion concert is next Thursday, November 21.

Admission is free and it begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Whitefish Middle School Performing Arts Center.

It's been a quieter night in Ferguson, Missouri. Some demonstrators returned to the streets Wednesday evening to protest the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white officer, but in diminished numbers.
To reassure the people of Ferguson, Attorney General Eric Holder reached into his own past, recalling the times he had been stopped by police officers who seemed to target him because of his race.
