Missoula Campaign Works To Get Donations For Philippines

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

People and businesses around Montana are teaming up to get donations for the more than 11 million people affected by the typhoon.

With more than 300 likes on Facebook and counting, and a handful of drop off sites around town, the Big Sky Big Heart relief drive is motivating people around the state to give a helping-hand to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

"I've never done a big relief before, so it's a little overwhelming," said Big Sky Big Heart creator, June Noel.

The campaign started after Noel saw the devastation of the typhoon through pictures of friends she has living in the Philippines, her native country.

"I'm looking at pictures they're posting, and I'm like oh my god, this is terrible, I need to do something about it," Noel said.

She said after seeing the pictures, she started asking friends and coworkers to donates clothes, sleeping bags, blankets and other necessities to send to the Philippines.

"A lot of friends shared that with they're friends, and pretty soon I had people asking me how they can help and donate as well," Noel said.

Noel set up the Big Sky Big Heart Facebook page Monday afternoon, and now locals have been teaming up to help raise donations, and people from across the state have been calling her to find out how they can help.

"I wasn't expecting this much help and reaction from the community, but everyone's been great," Noel said.

The campaign is working with Child United, a Seattle-based non-profit. From there, Child United will ship the donation boxes to the Philippines next week. In the meantime, Noel said she is searching for ways to get these gifts to Seattle.

"Getting these boxes form here to Seattle, that's what I'm really going to need to start thinking about, but either way we'll get them there," Noel said.

Big Sky Big Heart is accepting donations at drop off locations around Missoula until November 22.
