Meals On Wheels Preps To Deliver Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a holiday spent with friends and family, but unfortunately, some folks have the prospect of being alone.  Meals on Wheels wants to change that and deliver a delicious meal, too.

"We're here year round, but on Thanksgiving, we like to stop and say thanks to every single senior in Great Falls.  This is the town they built.  We walk on their sidewalks.  We appreciate the hard work that they've done, and so, hey, if you're alone on Thanksgiving and we're here cooking, why not send you a meal, too, as well as all of our Meals on Wheels folks who are alone," said Nancy Wilson, Co-Manager of Senior Nutrition.

While the initial prep work is under way with a small crew, over 400 meals are going to be delivered on Thursday, so things will get a little crazy in the kitchen.

"On Thanksgiving, this is pretty chaotic, but we manage to get it done because we'll have at least 40 volunteer drivers.  We'll have at least 20-some people cooking in the kitchen.  Normally, there's just one cook, so it becomes a lot of fun, a lot of noise and a lot of excitement, but we get it all done," said Wilson.

Most of the volunteers for Thursday's delivery will be military service members from Malmstrom Air Force Base.  The folks at Meals on Wheels will be very grateful for the extra helping hands.

"Well, we couldn't do it without the base, young men and women coming in and delivering those 400 meals, because normally, my staff better be home having their own Turkey and taking a little break from the day to day routine," said Wilson.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, the two most important things are giving and being thankful.  At this event each year,  the people delivering the food and those being delivered to come away with both.

"When they hold your hand and say thank you, you know why you did it.  You know why you gave up some of your Thanksgiving Day to help them.  They are so appreciative and they hold you so close.  They tell you again and again that nobody cares about them, but when you get there with the meal and you tell them Happy Thanksgiving, the base guys cannot believe how thankful they are for just one little meal," said Wilson.
