Is Black Thursday the new Black Friday?

Posted: Updated:

Welcome back, the day after Thanksgiving marks the first day of the holiday shopping season but this year it is coming a little early. In fact, many stores are opening their doors on Thanksgiving night.

Joe Moeller is in Helena where he talked to a few consumers about what this means for Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Thanksgiving is here which means this strip mall here in Helena is going to be busy as both Macy's and Target are going to be opening early for Black Friday, but many are calling it Black Thursday.

"Kind of like a rat race."

"It was just very crowded, people were pushing, shoving, it wasn't worth it to me."

The biggest shopping day of the year is this Friday and many stores are taking Black Friday to a whole new level and opening on Thanksgiving night.

"I think for Friday morning it will take some of the pressure off." said Joanna Easton.

"People should stay home with their families on Thanksgiving." said Pat Woods.

These stores in Helena are opening Thursday night at 8 P.M. to get a head start on the sales for consumers. Many retailers are worried this year because there are six fewer shopping days than usual.

"I think it is good for the businesses because I know with Thanksgiving being late this year, there was some people concerned about that. " continued Easton.

It brings the question of what is the holiday again, Black Friday or Thanksgiving?

"I feel sorry for them, I really do, but you know businesses are trying to make a buck and make a living too, probably a lot of the people that work can use the money. " continued Woods.

Annually Black Friday weekend can equal up to 40% of annual sales for retail giants, so for these businesses timing is crucial and this year especially with fewer days in the holiday shopping season.

"After you eat there is not a lot to do, so you know, might as well go shop go stimulate the economy."

Now in addition to Macy's and Target you can also expect to see sales at Hastings, K-Mart, and JCPenny just to name a few.
