Griz Softball-The Original Six

Posted: Updated:

Griz fans learn the name Tori Lettus as she is officially the first ever player to commit to the Griz softball program.  After the early signing period Montana has signed six players to be the foundation of their program which will get started in just ten months.

"Well it's obviously an exciting time because your hard work is starting to come to fruition right now , so obviously it takes more than six players to start a team," said Griz Softball Coach Jamie Pinkerton.

Lettus from Bothel, Washington along with fellow Washington natives Ashlyn Lyons, Delene Colburn, Carli Riordan as well as California product Gabby Martinez and Oklahoma native MaKenna McGill are your original six.  None of them are from Montana because Coach Pinkerton got to the Treasure State when the season was over but he hopes to add Montanans in the late signing period.

"Obviously we want Montana kids because in state kids they take a lot of pride and they know the tradition of the Griz so you need in state kids.  We will be out this spring so it's not like we have been ignoring the in state talent we just haven't had a chance to see it," said Pinkerton.

When it comes to recruiting Pinkerton says it's been easier than expected.  He said the things that made the coaching job attractive to him are the same things the recruits notice.

"It's been pretty refreshing when you start talking to them they tell you what draws them to the program and it's kind of and it's kind of the saying they want to be a part of history, I want to be the building blocks and help be the foundation," said Pinkerton.

Pinkerton expects to sign six to seven more players after the late signing period which starts in April and then fill out the roster with some walk-ons who are already enrolled at UM.
