Bullying in Montana Part 2

Posted: Updated:

Bullying affects school age children more than anyone and I'm here at Morningside Elementary School to learn more about what our elementary schools are doing to combat bullying.

"Well as you know community wide we're we have the OBS program in effect and that's a program that I think has really benefited all of us, because it's a district wide focus and then when you have that as you work to keep all of those plates spinning it really does help you attend to it and it is something that we focus on and so all staff have been trained and it is something that we take seriously," says Principal Bill Salonen.

At Morningside Elementary open discussion between students, facility and teachers help students feel more at ease to approach adults about problems they are having with bullying.

"One of the things here at Morningside that I am proud of is the fact that as we meet weekly in classrooms as teachers facilitate a weekly class meeting with their students and look at various scenarios things like that," says Salonen.

Another important step that Morningside has made is teachings students the difference between being a tattle tale and speaking out.

"Teach the kids that tattling is when you want to get somebody in trouble, reporting is when it is a safety issue and so helping kids to distinguish between those two I think it has made the reporting more effective," says Salonen.

For all schools and community the biggest force against bullying starts at home.

"Absolutely and we're working to educate parents along with students so those conversations can be happening at home as well as school," says Salonen.

Since implicating the OBS system in schools the Great Falls Public School District and schools themselves have seen a decrease in bullying being reported.
