Store Encounters Credit Hacking

Posted: Updated:

The company URM stores blocks a cyber-attack on its payment processing system, allowing shoppers to once again safely use credit cards at Montana grocery stores.

Last Monday, URM officials announced their network was hacked leaking an unknown number of customers' personal financial information.

URM President and CEO Ray Sprinkle says a forensic investigation team worked around-the-clock and through Thanksgiving to enhance their network security.

Sprinkle said, "We'll continue to extend our sincere apologies for the frustration and inconvenience that was caused."

Sprinkle says all future attacks are now blocked, but any card swiped at a Rosauers, Super 1 Foods, Harvest Foods or Family Foods store up until December 2nd could still be used to make fraudulent purchases.  He said, "So, I would recommend to all the consumers to continue to monitor their card statements, to make sure that the fraud does not continue."

Urm, which is based in Spokane, is now working with a security firm, its payment processor, and credit card companies to identify which cards were affected. Missoula Rosauers Store Manager, Jerry Kuykendall, says he was relieved to hear the cyber-attack was blocked.  He said, "But, you don't want to get too excited too quick, because this is a big operation, they've got a lot of stores that they've got to get back online."

Kuykendall says over a 7-day period, they notified every single customer who walked through the door that they'd have to use cash or check to avoid a wait at check-out saying, "it's just tough on the staff, trying to work around all the extra delays."

URM officials say they're still determining just how many stores were affected by the cyber-attack, but grocery stores all over the Northwestern U.S. were hit by the hackers.
