Whitefish Ski Resort Opens Saturday

Posted: Updated:

It's a day that only comes once a year and crews are out right now making sure it goes off without a hitch.

Skier Son Vu said, "it's the beginning of the ski season. You really don't believe it's here until you actually get on your skis and ride the lift up."

Opening day at the Whitefish Mountain Resort is bright and early this Saturday, at 9am. "Opening day is always an excited kind of nervous," said Vu.

I wasn't allowed to say anything all day, but now I've been given the go-ahead to spill the beans about why this year's opening is so special. Resort Spokeswoman Riley Polumbus stated, "this year we're very excited because we will be opening Hellroaring basin, this is the first time in it's 17 year existence we've been able to open this section of the mountain on opening day."

This is just one of the slopes locals like son vu keep coming back for.  He said, "most of my friends and I have been waiting for the mountain to open for a long time."  "we do have some guests in town who will be here as well as obviously a lot of locals."

Here at the Base Lodge there's about 21 inches of snow, but in the mountains behind me there are over fifty inches.  Polumbus said, "you're worried about the temperature, but you balance it against the fun of skiing, so at this point you brave the temperatures to get some turns in."

Chairs 2, 3, and six will all open at 9 and chair one will open just half an hour later. Skiers will also have about 1200 square feet of extra space at the base lodge. Polumbus, tells me that more than six feet of snow has fallen at the summit since the beginning of November.
