Merrill Newman Returns Home From North Korea

Posted: Updated:

After 42 days in detention a grateful Merrill Newman is finally home.

"It was a great homecoming and I'm tired and going to deal with my family now," said Newman.

Newman returned to San Francisco today his last leg of a journey that began in Pyongyang then passed through Beijing.

Reporter, "First thing, what would you like to do?"

Newman, "Go home and see my wife."

So eager to return, he turned down a lift aboard Air Force Two.

Vice President Biden said, "I offered him a ride home on Air Force Two, but as he pointed out, there is a direct flight to San Francisco, his home. So I don't blame him, I'd be on that flight too."

The Korean War veteran had originally traveled to North Korea as a tourist to spend 10 days sightseeing. Then agents from the communist regime of Kim Jong-Un pulled him off his return flight.

Accused of committing "hostile acts" during the 1950's war he later appeared on state controlled television apparently reading from a handwritten confession.

Newman's release likely granted because of that alleged "confession," his age and medical condition comes as tensions run high on the Korean peninsula. The secretive regime may have subdued earlier threats of nuclear war--but refuses to disarm completely.

And as Vice President Biden continues his tour of the area, he's pressed for the release of another American Kenneth Baea Christian missionary and tour guide held in North Korea for more than a year.
