Saints Lose NAIA Semi-Final, 14 Seniors

Posted: Updated:

The #3 ranked Carroll Saints had their season come to an end yesterday after a heartbreaking loss in overtime on the road to Cumberlands, the number 1 ranked NAIA team in the nation. The Saints will return many starters on both sides of the ball but will lose 14 seniors.  Most notably, their quarterback and leader Dakota Stonehouse.

Head coach Mike Van Diest reflected on the loss and his seniors.

"Well, this was a great tribute to them because to come back like we did and win 12 games. The senior leadership started from day 1 last January and finished all the way through today and my heart breaks for them.  But somebody is going to take a hit and we took the hit today and just congratulations to John Bland and his football team."

Carroll finished one game shy of reaching the national championship game in Rome, Georgia but ended the year at 12-2.

ENTIAT, Wash. - A burn out operation is planned for Tuesday morning in an effort to establish a secure line in the bottom of the canyon where the Mills Canyon Fire is burning. Burning material rolling downhill and igniting spot fires on the north side of Swakane Canyon have caused concerns and indicate a vulnerability to a fire escape and repeatedly expose firefighters to very steep terrain and rolling material.
