Senior Standout: Katie Fertterer

Posted: Updated:

A 3-sport star athlete, Katie Fertterer practiced as if she was the 3rd string point guard. And according to head coach Jeff Graham, that's just the type of person she is.

'Katie's a workhorse. She gets after it. She leads the state probably in floor burns, deflections, and steals. She just gets after it. She's our spark on defense and everyone feeds off of her."

Fellow senior star and friend Kara Gerke had similar things to say about Fertterer. And as the old saying goes, game recognizes game.

"We always rely on her to do the dirty work. She gets in she gets on every jump ball, she picks off every pass, she gets every steal. So we're really lucky to have that aspect of her as well as her leadership role that she plays. So, not only can she play but she's a vocal leader and helps us out with everything."

And her role as a leader on the court doesn't change when she leaves the gym. Sure, Fertterer can be counted on to take a final shot but more importantly, she can be counted on when it matters most.

"You can count on her for anything. She'll help you out with anything you need and she's just one of those girls that we're lucky to have in our school and I'm lucky to have in my life," said Gerke.

After her senior year and hopefully a 3rd state championship in basketball, Fertterer will attend MSU Northern where she will play for the Lights and enroll in the nursing program, something she's wanted to do her entire life.

"Ever since I was little it's been my dream to go to northern and do nursing. It's going to be a challenge with nursing and basketball but I think I can do it."

And I think she can do it too. If there's anyone capable of overcoming a challenging situation, it's Katie Fertterer.
