Bozeman Boy Honored For Donating Organs

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

First responders, family and friends came together on Friday to honor a 6-year-old Bozeman boy who changed people's lives after his tragic death.

Bryce Autry was only 6-years-old when he lost his life. In March 2012, he fell out of a wagon while playing out side and stopped breathing.

"His face was gray and his lips were blue, so I knew that was a bad sign," said Aria Autry, Bryce's mom.

Bryce was rushed to Bozeman Deaconess where doctors were stumped.

"They did a MRI in Billings and found he had a Chiari malformation," said Ian Autry, Bryce's dad.

Bryce's brain had slipped into his spinal column, which caused him to stop breathing and all automatic functions to stop.

"The top of your spine usually curves away from the spinal cord. His curved into his spinal cord and his brain was slipping down in the back," said Ian.

Bryce passed away five days later. Now, he is a hero.

"There was no doubt in my mind. I wanted his organs to go to somebody else," said Aria.

His organs including his kidney, his liver and his corneas have been donated to people across the United States.

"It's a really good feeling knowing that other people don't have to go through what we went through," said Aria.

"It was a loss for us, but we knew by donating his organs that somebody wasn't going to have to go through what we went through," said Ian.

And the need for organs is always there.

"In the United States there's over 110,000 people waiting for a life saving transplant and that waiting list continues to grow," said Megan Clark, LifeCenter Northwest.

And mom and dad say it was the right decision.

"I knew he was going to do some great things, but he's doing something great for others," said Ian.

"It may be a hard decision, but it's the right decision because other people can have that opportunity to keep going on," said Aria.

Bryce will be honored at the Rose Parade on New Years Day. His floragraph will be displayed, along with 80 other donors.
