Helena YMCA Cancels Tournament after Altercation

Posted: Updated:

A 5th grade basketball tournament was canceled in Helena over the weekend at the YMCA after police responded to call of a physical confrontation between a coach and a game official.

The Helena Police Department say that a coach disagreed with a scorekeeper during a game on Thursday night. 39-year-old, Tanya Brancamp, the scorekeeper during the Fall Spirit League Tournament, was cited for misdemeanor assault, and police are saying more citations are possible.

The tournament which ran through Saturday was canceled, and YMCA CEO David Smith, says the decision was difficult as it affects dozens of youth who have been playing under the Y's core values of honesty, respect, caring, and responsibility. Violence and poor sportsmanship cannot be tolerated at any level, especially in an organization such as the YMCA.
