Warm Weather and Wind Could Lead to More Avalanches in Montana

Posted: Updated:

Snow may not be falling, but it is certainly sliding here in Montana.

Director of the Flathead Avalanche Center, Eric Peitzsch says he got a report over the weekend of a human triggered avalanche at Noisy Basin, in the Swan. The slide trapped one man up to his arm, but he was traveling with a partner and managed to climb up and out without injury. Peitzsch explains that wind was likely to be the culprit in this slide and that, "Well, we haven't had snow fall in a couple of days, it's getting warmer, that's good, right?' Well actually, not necessarily. Wind plays a huge role in avalanche formation and development."

You can learn how to prevent and survive snow slides by attending two free avalanche classes that are coming up on the 18th and 19th at the Flathead National Forest Office in Kalispell There is also an outdoor portion on the 21st. But if none of those dates work for you, you are still in luck, because the same course will be offered again starting January 22nd.
