Yellowstone Opens, Expecting Many Visitors

Posted: Updated:

Yellowstone National Park is open for the winter season and officials say they expect a lot of visitors starting this weekend.

Thousands of people will be flying this holiday season and many of those people will need transportation once they get to their destination.  I talked to one local bus company that tells me the winter season is their busiest time of year.

"This is about the time of year that we really start kicking things off," said Dan Martin of Karst Stages.

Karst Stage owner Dan Martin says during the winter season they have up to 100 bus routes going out-everyday.

Martin said "any other time of year 20 dispatches is quite a bit so it triples this time of year for us."

He says one of their most common route is Bozeman to Big Sky.

According to Martin there are "three routes up at Big Sky and we do 7 round trips a day between Bozeman and Big Sky."

On busy days the buses fill up fast, but Martin says they do their best to accommodate everyone saying "there's sometimes we'll get walk ups to the airport corner or we'll get different things that happen where we won't have the room, but for the most part we'll take care of people if they give us a call a couple days before."

Transportation is not the only industry that is extremely busy this time of year.
Craig Delger owns Prolite Gear, an outdoor retailer in Bozeman whose sales increase dramatically throughout the winter months.

Delger stated, "we are seeing a 300% increase in revenue both on online and retail this time of year."

He says sometimes, his company has to plan out their inventory 12 months in advance saying, "we do have to look at seasonal demand changes and make sure we've got enough inventory in store you know it's a fine balance because we don't sell out, but we don't want to get stuck with too much at the end of year either."
