Carroll's Blomquist Named AFCA All-American

Waco, Texas – Fighting Saints junior linebacker Sean Blomquist is the latest in a long line of Carroll College standouts to be named an All-American.

The 5-11, 232-pound Helena High product was named to the 2013 AFCA NAIA Coaches' All-America Team announced Wednesday by the American Football Coaches Association.

"It's an honor to be selected an AFCA All-American. It's a testament to how great the coaching staff and my fellow teammates are," Blomquist said.

Blomquist led not only Carroll College, but also the Frontier Conference with 124 total tackles, 91 of which came of the solo variety – en route to being named the Frontier Conference's Defensive Player of the Year.

The linebacker was a mainstay behind opponents' line of scrimmage as he amassed 19 tackles for loss (12th nationally) and 7 sacks.

"I'm very happy for Sean, it's a great honor and he is very deserving with the type of season he has had," Carroll College head coach Mike Van Diest said.

Carroll College has had at least one player named to the AFCA Coaches' All-America Team for nine-straight seasons (2005-present), the longest such streak by any team.

As a Cliff-Harris Award Finalist (to be awarded Dec. 24), Blomquist further bolstered his post-season award resume by not only leading the team in all tackle categories, but also recovering two fumbles, adding an interception and a blocked punt during his stellar junior season.

"An award like this doesn't come along without the great support of the guys around me. It might say my name on it, but it truly is a team effort and team award," Blomquist said.

A team captain this season, Blomquist anchored the Carroll defense from his middle linebacker spot that allowed just 16.2 points per game during the season, third best in the nation. The Fighting Saints were 13th in total defense as measured by yards allowed.

"Sean's leadership on the field, at practice, and in the weight-room makes it easy to see why he's been as successful as he has been. This is just the first of many national honors he will receive during his time at Carroll," Van Diest added.

Blomquist found the end zone three times during the season, with a 45-yard interception return and moonlighting on offense he hauled in two touchdown receptions.

The AFCA All-America nod was Blomquist's second selection to an All-American team as he was selected to the First-Team of the Beyond Sports Network NAIA All-American team earlier this month.

The Fighting Saints have had 17 All-America selections represented by 16 players, second only in the NAIA to Georgetown College's (Ky.) 18 selections (15 players).

The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. These All-America teams are the only ones chosen exclusively by each division's coaches.

Carroll College won the Frontier Conference for the 13th time in 14 seasons and reached the National Semifinal, finishing 12-2 overall for the season.
