Successful Holiday Shopping Season for Small Businesses in Helena

Posted: Updated:

The holiday shopping season is coming to an end, and what a great year it has been for our Downtown Helena businesses. ABC Montana's Joe Moeller explains why things have gone so well.

"It has been an outstanding Christmas year here at the Basecamp downtown."

"We have had an outstanding year and December is holding well for us."

This holiday season has been good for Downtown Helena businesses who are reporting great sale numbers compared to previous years with more people hitting the local stores.

"We had a great Thanksgiving weekend and the four weekends we had this year versus five last year have been outstanding with great support from our community and a lot of folks really interested in shopping locally." said Tim Lynch the Manager of The Basecamp.

"I am seeing lots of people out like today I see lot's of locals out lots of bags going up and down the walking mall, it is fun to see Basecamp and Lasso on the Moon bags." said Birds and Beaslys owner Sandy Schull.

So businesses here in Downtown Helena are having a great holiday season and it could be due to a number of reasons including the city trying something new to draw customers to the area.

"We launched a social media campaign and so we made a bunch of flyers we created kind of a slogan and we promoted Downtown Helena Businesses so everyday we would market three to five Downtown Helena businesses on our Facebook page." said Carly Garrison from Downtown Helena, Inc.

Downtown Helena Incorporated worked with local business on a first ever social media campaign to bring customers downtown to shop for holiday gifts instead of giant retailers.

"We also just carried the message of, what goes around comes around stays around, shop local which basically means if you spend your money downtown it stays in town and you can do that by shopping locally." added Garrison.

They are is spreading the word with the community on deals and information about businesses downtown, which is leading to an increase in sales.

"They love the amount of exposure that they get and a lot of businesses that I talked to have noticed a significant difference in the amount of business." continued Garrison.

Since the great response with this first ever social media campaign, Downtown Helena Inc. plans on utilizing similar campaigns to promote future events like shopping downtown.
