Steady Year for Helena Regional Airport Despite Fewer Flights Leaving State

Posted: Updated:

It is the busiest time of year for travel and the Helena Regional Airport shows steady numbers in this year in comparison to previous ones even though there are fewer flights leaving the state. ABC Montana's Joe Moeller spoke with the airport director to find out more.

Around 200,000 passengers use the Helena Regional Airport each year, over six times the population in the city of Helena. Airport officials are saying this year ran smoothly, but not much different than previous years.

"Probably running 95% or higher, it is always really busy we have limited numbers of flights so our flights are full, it is this way every year."said Ron Meces the Airport Director.

One factor that determines the airline traffic is weather, which the airport has been grateful for.

"Weather has been pretty great here so we have been pretty lucky, there has been some inbound delays, you know Denver, Indianapolis, Salt Lake has had trouble so over the last couple of weeks we have had weather all around us, but it has been good here, but it has resulted in a couple delays and a couple of cancellations too" added Meces.

Although 2013 has been successful for Helena Regional over all in Montana there are fewer flights that are departing from the state.

"There are fewer seats available, although we hear about there is a new flight from here to there the airlines are being really careful about their operations and on certain days of the week they cancel flights so over all fewer seats out of Montana, but there are a few new flights that have been added." continued Meces.

There will not be any changes in flights next year here in Helena, the only major changes in the future is a new runway.

"We have a five year capitol improvement plan so about five years out and so pretty much at the end of that plan in 2017 we are looking at redoing our main runway and you know that is a cycle that has to be done every 15-20 years."said Meces.
