Patients at St. Peters Hospital Got an Unexpected Christmas Gift

Posted: Updated:

Christmas Eve at St. Peters Hospital  in Helena sort of looks like Santa's Workshop as these special volunteers are hard at work to make Christmas day special for patients in the hospital.

"I was a nurse here at St. Peters and I felt kind of bad having to work on Christmas Eve so often so I thought well if I feel that way how about the patients that are here. So we began the sock idea." said Arlene Mathews.

Roughly 60 years ago former nurse and hospital volunteer Arlene Mathews started a tradition with the help of her sons. Volunteers create the hand crafted stockings and then Mathews and her sons pass them out on Christmas Eve night.

"We presume they are sleeping and we leave them on the desk and the nurse when she goes in to check them at night she delivers them to the patients." continued Mathews.

Roughly 80 patients wake up here at St. Peters hospital on Christmas day to an expected goodie packed hand made Christmas stocking.

"They are going to get three candy items that come from the Hospital Association and they will get an orange and an apple which comes from the hospital." added Mathews.

Although Mathews and her sons aren't there to see the faces of the patients as they wake up, they know they are appreciated.

"We don't very often see the patients we see the nurses and their staff and they really appreciate it and they know that the patients will appreciate it when they arise in the morning, but we are generally here later in the night where we don't really see the patients." said Jon Mathews.

Although it may seem to the patients that Santa and his helpers may have dropped off these Christmas stockings, to Mathews son he describes them as something else.

"Or the angel and the angel's helpers I think."
