Higher Minimum Wage in Montana to come with the New Year

Posted: Updated:

Those making minimum wage around the state are going to be starting 2014 on a good foot because an increase to the state wide minimum wage is coming with the New Year.

Beginning next Wednesday, January 1st, minimum wage in the Treasure State is going up ten cents to $7.90 an hour. Due to minimum not having gone up in several years, in 2006 voters passed an initiative to keep Montana's minimum wage relevant to the price of living.

"What the initiative put into place is every year, every August, we look at the CPI, Consumer Price Index, to look to see whether or not the price of goods has gone up. If the price of goods has gone up then minimum wage will go up so that our earning minimum wage can at least keep up so they can buy the basic necessities like milk, gas, you know those types of things. says Casey Kyler-West from the Department of Labor and Industry.

When voters passed the initiative in 2006 the minimum wage was only $5.15 an hour.
