Man Stabbed Over A Month Ago Dies, Case Turns Into Homicide

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

The charges against the Whitefish wife who stabbed her 37-year-old husband more than one month ago are changing after her husband passed away over the weekend.

The Whitefish man stabbed in the heart by his own wife passed away Sunday, December 29 after staying nearly a month at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, and now the county attorney's office is saying the charges against his wife, AnnMari Newton could change within the week.

"We now know it will be a homicide charge, but we want to make sure we have every bit of evidence looked through thoroughly," said Travis Ahner, the deputy county attorney.

Ahner says they are considering charging AnnMari Newton with one of three different kinds of homicide: deliberate homicide, negligent homicide, or mitigated deliberate homicide. Basically, they are in talks with Whitefish police to see if this was an accident or not, and if not, to see if the attack was brought on by high emotions or stress.

Investigators say on November 25, AnnMari Newton stabbed her husband in their Whitefish home with their two kids in earshot and, in court, neighbors have said the attack may have been alcohol fueled. Ahner says alcohol alone is not enough to bring a deliberate homicide down to a mitigated deliberate homicide.

"I hope and pray that the charges are raised against her and that the court finds her guilty in this horrible crime against my brother and I want everyone to know the real victims here are the kids," said Alex Newton, Chad Newton's brother.

The Newton family is still fighting to get custody of the two kids from Child Protective Services. Right now, AnnMari is out on bail, but that could also change after she is re-arraigned for the new charge, something that is not entirely uncommon.

"I would say probably half the cases that we deal with we normally amend charges," said Ahner.

Alex Newton says his family is planning a memorial service for his brother in Michigan.

AnnMari's next appearance in Flathead County District Court is scheduled for March 5.
